My taste of the good life

There are perks in my line of work, like once I got some really nice beauty products, and another time I got some free Ryvitas…which was not that exciting I must admit, but last week I got to try out a food service that’s been launched in Maidenhead. It’s called Hello Fresh, and the lovely PR people sent me a box with meals for three nights. I should mention, this isn’t a paid bit, I reviewed it for the Tiser (as it’s affectionately called by staff, which for now includes me). But I was so impressed with the whole …

Oatcakes

In Scotland I had the pleasure of eating homemade oatcakes at The Steading cafe in Keith. They were served in place of bread with cheese and complemented the meal perfectly. I have used oatcakes on my cheese plates beforeĀ  but I’d never thought to eat them with things like smoked salmon, clapshot (like a tasty mash potato with turnips and chives) or maybe even with something sweet like butter and jam for breakfast. They’re a great alternative to bread, if you’re looking to reduce your processed flours.

As these oatcakes are made with no flour and not much butter, they …

Haggis and the Highlands

I went to Scotland this week and have tried everything from Scottish rope-grown mussels, smoked salmon and oatcakes to Braemar Mist, cranachan, haggis and black pudding. I was not expecting it to be a food-lover’s holiday but I did come away with some memorable eating experiences. I could go on about the landscape which was absolutely epic and breathtaking. I could tell you about my mountain trek up to the bone caves and 13th Century Cawdor Castle or the 4000 yr old burial chambers in a farmyard. But this is a food blog after all, so I’ll tell you about …

Best ever pancakes

I’ve been making pancakes for years and I’ve never really thought they were that great. I much preferred leaving it to the professionals at Pancakes on the Rocks or any other venue that can flip a decent batter. It was AT’s birthday yesterday and I was determined to make us the best damn pancakes this side of the equator. I researched a little and settled on a recipe that I thought looked easy enough and pinched some advice from the Pioneer Woman. And ladies and gents, I do believe I can offer you the best pancake recipe ever. ‘Best’ because …

Perfect cream cheese icing

I had a victory yesterday. A cream cheese victory. I hear you asking, ‘can cream cheese be anything other than victorious?’ and I agree but in this case I’m talking about cream cheese icing. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried making it, but mine always goes runny. I’ve researched it and up until now have not been able to make any progress, with forums saying time and time again that it’s just nature of the beast. The sweetener will make the icing runny.

But yesterday I was determined to achieve a firm, robust icing for a cake I’d make …
