Chocolate babka

It finally happened. I took a photo of the chocolate babka that is sufficient to post on this blog. Granted the pics aren’t great, but chocolate babka is not about good looks. I have been using a slightly minimimised version of the Martha Stewart recipe that seems to be the standard used by most bloggers.

Much to the dismay of my hips, I have made babka about four times now. Each time I made mistakes, missing out steps and doing things wrong, but this last time I got everything right and even made a few changes of my own. It’s …

Joël Robuchon believes that ratatouille is best when you cook each vegetable separately, so that ‘each will taste truly of itself’. While that theory might work wonders for a man who gets paid to cook rataouille, it doesn’t go down so well with the likes of busy people like me and most other working adults. While I’ll proudly admit that I’m never too busy to make good food, I will generally find the easiest way to achieve the best results. Lemon Yoghurt Cake

It’s nearly Mother’s Day. In my house this means home made cards from the boys, and an uncertain hubby asking what I want. While I wasn’t blessed with the sensitivity and understanding of little girls, I was gifted with two precious boys who love me. I don’t need Hallmark to help us along with that, but I do believe that Mother’s Day is a good opportunity to tell your mum how much she means to you. This lemon yoghurt cake is an ideal way to celebrate Mothering Sunday, as it’s known here in the UK. It’s light, sweet and tingles …

I have a little recipe book where I keep all my cuttings and family recipes. Its pages are splattered with flour and other ingredients, and some of the pages are even stuck together. Scattered through out this book are mysterious little post its with hand-written and very scant recipes for various Croatian sweeties. Sweeties for recipes that my mum and I love, but find hard to track down. Something you might not know about some people, is that sometimes they don’t share the entire recipe with you. You’ll get enough to get you a good result, but often a little …
