Smarties Cookies

My Dad bought me this apron back from a trip to Zagreb. It’s a hand stitched motif of a pretty lady in the kitchen. It says ‘I’m sweeter than sugar, I’m your dinner’….which sounds strange but it’s a translation and rhymes in the Croatian Language. I think I love this apron so much because it’s made with a starched cotton/linen that you just can’t get here. It softens so beautifully over time. I love the simple lace trim and the pretty face of the lady. It has a European charm that is hard to describe. I love it so much that I actually want to wear it. I have bought lots of aprons over the years but never actually worn one, preferring instead to slowly but surely, soil most of my wardrobe.

My dad also bought back a gift for my sons, two enormous gift packs of Smarties. There’s only so many Smarties two little boys should eat and so I was bound by conscience to hold back at least half and bake them into cookies. See how I did that? I turned something sugary and fattening and turned it into something even more sugary and fattening. That’s my gift. So here is it is, a recipe for a cakey cookie (as opposed to chewy or crunchy), replacing the choc-chips from the recipe with Smarties. The results are pleasantly pastel.



Smarties Cookies Recipe
200g butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup white sugar
2 1/4 cups flour
1/2 baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
2 cups of Smarties (or choc chips, M & Ms, etc)

OVEN at 180C (350F)

Cream butter and sugar.
Add salt, vanilla and eggs stir till combined.
Add flour and baking soda, stir till JUST combined.
Add Smarties and bake till golden.
